By L. R. Rabiner and A.W. Rosenfeld (Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J. 1976). Random signals and random variables are both treated on the same basis and often interact. This book was published simultaneously with an edition of the R. V. Jones theory of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Signal. Concepts. 1st edition (Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J. 1970). While the Jones book was an exposition of the theory of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Signal. Concepts, the Rabiner and Rosenfeld book is more an exposition of the theory of Random Signal, and was written in view of courses using the Jones book. The main goal of the Jones book is to provide a systematic theory for the use of the concept of probability, randomness, and random signal. It treats probability theory in a way that is conducive to the scientific study of natural phenomena, and provides a foundation for the important statistical procedures, such as maximum likelihood estimation, hypothesis testing, and model selection. The theory of random variables is presented in a rigorous and pedagogical manner. The R. V. Jones theory of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Signal. Concepts covers these topics in an exposition suitable for courses in the applied disciplines of Statistics and Operational Research. This book is mainly written for students taking courses in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biostatistics, and Operational Research. It also is suited for courses in the general field of probability, statistics, and management science, as well as in the applied disciplines of economics, engineering, and other sciences. While this is a textbook, it is not a complete or self-contained treatment of random signals and random variables. In an effort to serve the needs of courses using Probability, Random Variables, and Random Signal. Principles, 4th edition, we have included in the Appendix. on p. 533, (appendix C, the Rabiner and Rosenfeld. Theory of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Signal. Concepts). A list of requirements for the textbook has been developed to guide instructors in selecting the most suitable text. These requirements are: (1) It shall be organized so that the basic theory of random signals and random variables is readily accessible to the beginning student. In addition, it shall be designed to lead to a coherent development of the fundamentals. (2) It shall be organized so that the basic theory of
